A. Students who do not return to a designated affected postsecondary institutions are not required to repay any federal financial aid they received from that institution for a period of study that was interrupted due to Hurricane Katrina. If the student decides to attend another postsecondary institution, a new federal financial aid package may be awarded for attendance at the new institution. (3/1)

I was awarded federal financial aid to attend a postsecondary institution impacted
by Hurricane Katrina. I did not attend another institution
during the interrupted term and am returning to my original school. What
are my obligations regarding the repayment of the aid I received for the period
of study that was interrupted as a result of the hurricane?
A. Students who did not attend another institution for the Fall term and are
returning to their original designated affected postsecondary institutions are
not required to repay any federal financial aid they received from that institution
for a period of study that was interrupted due to Hurricane Katrina. If the
student decides to return to the original institution, a new federal financial
aid package may be awarded for attendance at that institution. (3/1)

I was awarded federal financial aid to attend a postsecondary institution impacted
by Hurricane Katrina. Because of the hurricane, I attended
another school for the Fall where I also received federal financial aid. I intend
to return to my original school. What are my obligations regarding the
repayment of the aid I received at the original school for the period of study
that was interrupted as a result of the hurricane? What are my obligations regarding
the repayment of the aid I received at the new school?
A. Students who attended another institution for the Fall term, received federal
financial aid at that new institution and are returning to their original designated affected postsecondary institutions are not required to repay any federal financial
aid they received from the original institution for the period of study that
was interrupted due to the hurricane. When the student decides to return to
the original institution, a new federal financial aid package may be awarded
for continued attendance at that institution.
The federal financial aid that the student received to attend the new institution
will remain in place and the student will be responsible for repaying any student
loans awarded for the term at the new school. (3/1)
A. If a student decides to return to their original designated affected postsecondary institutions after attending another institution where no federal financial aid was awarded, he/she should contact their original institution to determine the status of the Fall financial aid award. (3/1)
A. The Department of Education
is working with schools and lenders to expedite the aid cancellation process.
Once it is complete, your lender will notify you when your impacted federal
student loan has been cancelled. You may also contact your lender to inquire
how long this process will take.
Federal financial aid originally awarded to students for attendance at a designated affected postsecondary institutions that is not required to be repaid by the
parent or student will not impact future awards of federal financial aid. (3/1)
