Under the National Science Scholars Program (NSSP) the Secretary awards scholarships to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, who show promise of continued outstanding academic performance, and who are selected by the President, for the following purposes: (a) To recognize student excellence and achievement in the physical, life, and computer sciences, mathematics, and engineering. (b) To provide financial assistance to students to continue their postsecondary education in those fields of study at sustained outstanding levels of performance. (c) To contribute to strengthening the leadership of the United States in those fields. (d) To strengthen the United States' mathematics, science, and engineering base by offering opportunities to pursue postsecondary education in physical, life, and computer sciences, mathematics, and engineering. (e) To encourage role models in scientific, mathematics, and engineering fields for young people. (f) To strengthen the United States' mathematics, scientific, and engineering potential by encouraging equal participation of women with men in mathematics, scientific, and engineering fields.
